Home Decorating Ideas for Spring

Home Decorating for Spring

Ok, so at the time of this post we are still headlong into Winter, but the thought of some spring weather to come should be good enough to get you planning for your new spring cleaning and designs ahead. If you need some encoragement, come along to our Coffee Shop in store in Vereeniging and warm yourself up with a hot soup or winter breakfast whilst you browse our paint selection and wallpaper collection.

Spring is a time of renewal. It is the time of year when people across the country begin shaking off the final dregs of winter, opening their windows, and hanging clothes on the lines to dry. It is the time of year that many people associate with cleaning but very few associate with home decorating. Sadly enough there are very few times of year when it is more appropriate to decorate your home. Face it, for most of us, this is the only time of year that we are actually happy about cleaning.

During the summer months we clean because the kids (young and old alike) are constantly tracking dirt, mud, grass, and goodness knows what else into the house. Cleaning in these days is a chore and yet we still manage to bring out the patriotic colors and celebrate South Africa in style. Goodness knows how with all the extra cleaning that is going on and the nearly double amounts of iced tea and Castle being consumed daily. Still we manage to decorate and take great joy in doing so as if some right of passage has been achieved by our home decorating efforts.

During Winter months we clean house because we have no choice. Friends and family will be coming over and they expect our homes to be well decorated and clean. This I must tell you is quite the accomplishment with the freezing cold evenings and night time and yet somehow we manage to muster up some cheer when others are around. Dont forget its also a great time of the year to paint your roof in the Gauteng Region. Usually there is not so much rain, so you can get up on the roof and give it a good freshen up. Check out the specials at Hot Pot from time to time on Roof Paints, from Dulux Roofguard, to Excelsior and Riordan Roof Paints, there is plenty of choice and colour.

Spring is the one time of year in which our cleaning efforts are nothing short of inspired. Yet it is also the spring that often eludes us when it comes to inspiration for decoration. Perhaps we are too tired from all of our cleaning efforts to seek the inspiration to decorate. If this is the case with you, then my hope is that some of the ideas mentioned below will help bring some serious decoration inspiration your way.

1) Flowers. Spring is the time of flowers. They are all around us. Use fresh cut flowers and candles to create beautiful arrangement and centerpieces throughout your home.

2) Candles. While briefly mentioned above they deserve their own spot among the top five to say the least. Candles can be soothing, relaxing, invigorating, inspiring, beautiful, elegant, and simply smell good. Candles are great no matter what time of the year it is however, if you select candles in bright spring colors and fragrances you might be amazed at exactly how uplifting these candles can be.

3) Towels. Yes I said towels. In your kitchen and your bathrooms you need bright, bold colors that signify spring, birth, and renewal. These little touches can make a huge difference in not only your attitude about cleaning and decorating but also your attitude about cooking.

4) Fragrance. While most people do not realize that the fragrances we use in our homes is a type of decoration. It makes our noses happy to some degree but also the potpourri and candles are often decorations in and of themselves. Put out bowls filled with brightly colored and lightly scented fragrance balls, dried fruit, and other delights. Gourmet potpourri can be found in all kinds of gift and fragrance shops and is a rather inexpensive way to add a fragrant touch to your home decorating as well as the fragrance of your home.

5) Fruit. Have bowls placed throughout your home filled with fresh fragrant fruit. Not only does this add yet another layer of fragrance to your home but it is also visually appealing and edible. There are three checks in the ‘pro’ column for this simple decorative step and I have yet to find one in the ‘con’ column unless you consider the fact that it must be eaten before it gets too ripe.

5 Low Cost Ways to Enhance your home with Paint

Painting Ideas – 5 Low Cost Ways To Enhance Your Home With Paint

Author: Lee Cusano

1. Faux Painting – good wallpaper can be expensive. And so is the cost of someone doing it for you. On the other hand faux painting if you are doing it yourself can save you a lot of money. So this can be a great low cost way to decorate.

The secret is to find good faux designs and colors. Then after choosing a specific design, practice it on something before doing any walls. If you get yourself some faux brochures there are some basic finishes that look really nice and are easy to master.

2. Painting Stripes – this is great for bathrooms and even bedrooms. By choosing the right colors and taking your time, your stripes can turn out looking really nice. The secret is to measure out your strips, use a plum level or regular level and painters tape that is bleed-resistant.

I painted a bathroom in stripes for a customer. Because of the colors they chose and us taking our time to do the job right, it turned out very nice. We saw another job done by someone that was so bad they did not pay him but rather told him to leave and not come back!

3. Painting Stars – have you ever thought about having an accurate copy of the nighttime sky on your bedroom ceiling or in a game room? Most people usually go out and buy those plastic stick-on stars, which are O.K. if you are into plastic stick-on stars.

Another way to go about getting stars on your ceiling is to check out this inexpensive course from By getting this course you can easily add a night sky mural to any ceiling of your choice. Or you can always hire someone who specializes in this type of artwork.

Your ceiling will look like any other ceiling during the daytime. At night when the lights go out, it looks like the night sky. This is due to a special set of paints. You can make an accurate copy of the night sky. Even the Milky Way will look real. Another great low cost way to paint your home or business and to add value.

4. Texture Painting – if you have old walls that are rough from being wallpapered in the past or just beat up from age, you can give them a whole new look super fast using texture paint.

When my wife and I were first together we textured our dinning room walls. We had old plaster and we bought a gallon of ready-mixed texture paint from Sherwin Williams in Spanish white.

We really did not know what we were doing. I used crumpled newspaper to put it on the walls and it actually did not look too bad. It a nice textured look.

5. Painting Woodwork with Oil-Base Enamels – do you have an older home with the older style woodwork? By giving your doors, windows and trim a custom pant job using oil-base enamel paint can really enhance the beauty. There is nothing like a creamy smooth enamel finish done on woodwork this way. Most latex paints are inferior and are not worthy of fine woodwork.

A good example of woodwork restoration is an older home we did quite a bit of work in. It was in the student ghetto area that a guy owned and paid off early. He rented the upstairs out and lived in the downstairs. He had the money to do quite a bit of home improvement.

His house was one of these older homes and he had really nice woodwork. Nice solid doors, tall baseboards and wide trim. It needed to be restored though. It was all old, dark, stained woodwork and would have looked really good with a nice enamel finish in a “coffee with cream” type of color.

If you do the job yourself it would only cost you the enamel paint, the primer and some sandpaper plus a nice quality paintbrush. This low cost project will definitely take some time to do but the end result is beauty and a definite increase in your property value.

Traditional Home Design Ideas in 2011

Watch this video courtesy of Youtube that has some nice ideas for traditional home design ideas in 2011.

When making plans for a home decorating project, it is important to sit down and write down your ideas and goals. Without a plan the experience may become confusing and frustrating. There are many details to work out when planning to decorate your home such as theme, materials and intentions for the space being decorated. It is pointless to get up one morning thinking I’ll decorate my dining room today. It would be a nice thought but without previous planning, doubtfully the project would amount to much. Home decorating tips such as this are helpful.

Inexpensive Home Decorating Ideas

Home decorating is not something that requires a vast fortune in order to do. Nor is it something that must be accomplished all at once. The ideal manner to decorate a home is one step at a time, one room at a time. This makes the process much less stressful, more enjoyable, and imminently more affordable. Some great ideas are to start small then work your way up.

Paint is one of the least expensive things you can do to a room that will have the most immediate and profound impact on the overall look and feel of the room in question. By selecting the paint colors and painting the walls before anything else is done everything else can be done in order to match the colors you have placed on the walls. More importantly, paint is something that the average person is capable of doing on their own rather than being forced to hire experts in order to get it done. Any home improvement project that you can do yourself will save more money than you can imagine along the way.

Once you’ve managed changing your walls, you may wish to change your window treatments. Roman shades are an excellent choice as they are rather simple to make (which would leave you only the cost of the fabric and supplies) but they are not the only option. I would recommend some sort of curtains as a form of window treatment as they are much more personal than the typical mini blinds found in so many homes today. Curtains or Roman shades can be purchased to match the colors on your walls and should not be a terribly expensive investment.

Flooring has in the past often been out of reach of those seeking to casually improve the look of a room. New technology and materials have made new flooring a valid option even for those who are on seriously limited home decorating budgets. Laminates are a good option for those who love the look of hardwood but cannot afford the expense of materials and/or labor for these floors in their homes. Laminates can often be installed by even those with limited skills and make a very noticeable change in the look and feel of a room. Peel and stick tile is another option for those whose budgets will not accommodate laminate flooring. Check out the options and the prices at your local home improvement store. You just might be amazed at what you can afford.

Rather than purchasing new furniture to make an impressive impact on the look of your living area, try furniture covers. These can often be purchased in shades that will match your new décor and are much less expensive than new furniture leaving money for the little touches that matter so much in the overall look of the room. Besides, when friends and family walk in and see the changes they will be shocked and amazed. They may even be convinced that you do in fact have new furniture.

Mirrors are excellent tools to use when decorating a home. More importantly, they are rather inexpensive for the most part. Mirrors also lend the appearance of a much more wide-open space than having no mirrors would accomplish. If you have a fire place, strategically located mirrors can spread the warmth and coziness (if not the heat) of a fire throughout the room making the room as a whole seem like a much more enjoyable place to escape the winter “blahs”.

Artwork, candles, vases, and floral arrangements can be purchased one piece at a time in order to give the room a more polished look. Once you’ve decorated one room in your home with these budget tips in mind you can move on to other rooms in your home and incorporate the same ideals as you go. Remember that decorating your home doesn’t have to cost a fortune but it will require some patience and planning on your part. With this in mind, there should be nothing to stop you from heading out today and getting to work on your new home decorating plans.

Tool for Bathroom Remodeling

Common Bathroom Remodeling Tools You May Need

Are you looking to start a bathroom remodeling project soon? If so, do you have all of the items that you will need? When it comes to bathroom remodeling or just about any other home improvement project, many individuals automatically think of the materials that will be used. If you are looking to replace your bathtub, of course, you will need a replacement bathtub, but how will you get that bathtub installed without tools? You can’t. That is why it is important to know what you tools you will need before starting your next bathroom remodeling project.

When it comes to tools, you will find that the tools used with all depend on the remodeling that is being done. For instance, if you are planning on remodeling your entire bathroom, you will likely need more tools than you would if you were just replacing your bathroom cabinets. It might be a good idea to keep these tools, which are listed below, on hand at all times.

Using a level with a tape measure will not only help to ensure that your cabinets or wall hangings are centered, but that they are also level.

Another tool that you should always have on hand, when remodeling your bathroom, is a screwdriver. In fact, unless you have a multi-function screwdriver, you may even need to have to have more than one screwdriver on hand. Even better than a multi-function screwdriver is a screw gun. It is also advised that you have a ladder on hand, when remodeling your bathroom. Ladders are used to help reach high places. If you need to paint your bathroom ceiling or even replace your bathroom lights, you may need to use a ladder. In addition to a ladder, it may be a good idea to keep a small stepstool on hand. Stepstools are great for helping you reach high spaces that are high enough to need assistance, but not high enough to need a ladder. Stepstools are also nice because most tend to take up a relatively small amount of space.

In addition to all of the above mentioned tools, it is also important to place a focus on safety. If and when you go out to purchase new remodeling tools, it is advised that you also purchase some safety equipment, especially if you don’t already own some. Safety equipment includes, but is not limited to, work gloves, construction hats, face masks, and safety goggles.
